Scanning analogue optical soundtracks

Approximately 85 years ago sound was introduced into motion picture. Today film archives have the responsibility to transfer historic audiovisual information from the carrier film into a format that allows access with contemporary and effective means while respecting the principles that guide the preservation of cultural assets. Based on the analysis of historic sound photography and the historic reproduction characteristic the requirements and possibilities to retrieve an authentic audio signal from an analogue optical soundtrack will be presented.
